There is no doubt that the rise of artificial intelligence will dramatically affect every aspect of our lives. Recent advancements in technology have given way to a plethora of new uses for almost every part of society. Education has seen and will continue to see emerging technologies that can benefit teachers and students in and out of the classroom. This article will discuss aspects of artificial intelligence that have impacted education and what the future holds for an integrated education system.

Grading

Artificial Intelligence has begun to alleviate the stress of grading tests and assignments for teachers. Some teachers can attest to the time-consuming act of grading tests every couple of weeks. AI has reached the point where it can accurately grade almost all multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank testing. However, AI cannot accurately grade open-ended questions such as essays. The ability to have AI grade tests gives teachers more time to write lesson plans, interact with students, and work on their professional development skills.

Applications

In many ways, AI can be directly used in the classroom to benefit students. There are applications available to teachers that can help them communicate with students who either speak a different language or have physical disabilities such as hearing loss or blindness. An application called Presentation Translator can be used to translate presentations or speeches into a variety of languages. Presentation Translator comes with a free app downloadable to computers, smartphones, and tablets. Students can listen in to the app and have the presentation dictated to them in their native tongue and even ask questions back to the teacher through the app. There are many other practical applications that can be used in the classroom; this is just one example of how AI can profoundly affect the interaction between teachers and students.

Role Change

Current uses of AI in the classroom can help supplement the relationship between teachers and students. In the future, AI has the potential to overhaul the role of teachers in the classroom. Future advancements of AI could create a shift making teachers into facilitators. AI could create and execute lessons to students while at the same time having the ability to search any question a student may have about the material on an ever-growing database. Teachers could become something of an engineer of education where their roles are to intervene and supplement AI courses when needed.

AI and education are sure to be intertwined for the greater good of students and teachers. Now is an exciting time to be a part of the process!
